How I Fulfilled My ‘Unrealistic’ Dream: A Journey in Business Class
Have you ever wondered why some dreams feel so out of reach? I had a dream just like that: a long-haul flight in business class.
For some, this might seem like just a whim or a trivial desire, but for me, it meant something much bigger.
This dream symbolized comfort, abundance, and freedom. But the journey to fulfilling it turned out to be far more complex than I had expected. And, as is often the case, the main lesson wasn’t in achieving the dream itself but in what it taught me along the way.

When the Material Seems Unattainable
There are dreams we consciously turn into goals — things we know we can achieve with enough effort and persistence. But then there are those desires that feel almost unreachable. Flying business class was one of those dreams for me.
It was more than just a comfortable airplane seat. It was a symbol of a “dream life” I sometimes envisioned during my meditations.
I imagined myself as successful, confident, happy, and free to choose and do what I wanted, savoring everything life had to offer. But every time I pictured this vision, doubts surfaced:
- “Why am I focusing on something so superficial?”
- “Why do I care about material things instead of spiritual growth?”
These thoughts brought on a sense of shame. I believed that someone genuinely striving for personal and spiritual growth shouldn’t place value on things like this.
Embracing the Material and Finding Inner Balance
Over time, I began to notice that struggling against these desires didn’t bring me any relief. They didn’t disappear — they only deepened the internal conflict.
One day, my spiritual teacher said:
“If your primary intention is focused on something material, you become a slave to that desire. But if your true intention is spiritual growth — something beyond fleeting material things — then everything you need for that growth will come to you naturally.”
Those words made me pause and reflect. I started to see my desires from a different perspective. I realized it wasn’t about rejecting all material things but about not being dependent on them.
I began to embrace my dreams as they were, without judging myself for them. Instead of feeling ashamed, I started asking myself questions:
- Why is this important to me?
- What is this desire really about?
The answers surprised me. Wanting to fly business class wasn’t about status or luxury. It was tied to deeper needs: security, comfort, freedom, and self-worth. It wasn’t “bad” or “wrong.” It simply revealed areas where I needed to work on myself.
From Inner Work to Outer Reality
As I delved deeper into this inner work, I came to an important realization: my worth isn’t defined by external attributes. It comes from within.
This process involved many steps:
- I learned to accept myself as I was, even if my desires seemed superficial to others.
- I practiced letting go of control, trusting life, and embracing the belief that everything would come in its own time.
- I reminded myself that material achievements are just pleasant bonuses, not the foundation of true happiness.
The Dream Comes True
And then one day, something incredible happened.
My husband and I were planning to fly home from Panama, where I had undergone some significant internal transformations. During the online check-in process, he was offered an upgrade to business class at a price far below the usual cost.
I didn’t expect him to seriously consider it. Normally, he finds such expenses impractical. But this time, he said that, considering the length of the flight, the chance to sleep, and the great deal, it might actually be worth it.
I vividly remember that moment — when something you’ve long dreamed of starts happening in reality, but it’s still hard to believe it’s true. It reminded me of how I felt when I received my driver’s license after years of wanting it. Something I had dreamed of for so long had finally become real.
This wasn’t the first time something like this happened to me, and I’ve always remembered these moments. They’re those magical instances when your reality shifts from what you’re used to into what you’ve been visualizing for so long.
Joy and Awareness
When I finally sat in the business-class cabin, I was overwhelmed with joy and gratitude — gratitude to life and to my husband for making this moment possible. The spacious seats, delicious food, beauty, comfort, and the chance to sleep properly all felt like an incredible gift.
But the most important realization came from within. I understood that this experience was just a joyful moment — something to savor — but it didn’t resolve my internal challenges or make me better or worse as a person.
This flight was a reminder that while material things can bring joy, our true state of being comes from within.
Material comforts can solve practical problems, provide pleasure, and even create moments of happiness. But when we make them the ultimate goal, we risk disappointment. Because behind every material desire lies the wish to feel a certain way or change something within ourselves.
When we first create that inner shift, cultivate the state we’re longing for, we’re much more likely to fulfill material desires as well. The excessive attachment and dependency on them begin to fade.
Lessons Learned
This experience taught me several important lessons:
- Letting go opens doors to dreams. When we stop obsessing over our desires and judging ourselves for them, they often come true in the most unexpected ways.
- Material things aren’t inherently bad. They can be a meaningful part of life, but they don’t define our worth.
- Inner growth is the foundation. When we find joy and stability within ourselves, external circumstances lose their power to dictate our happiness.
- Savor the moment. It may seem simple, but how often do we truly allow ourselves to enjoy what’s happening right now without trying to hold on to it forever?
