3 Best journaling ideas for self improvement
Even before becoming a transformational coach, I’ve been journaling for self improvement for more than ten years. I’ve tried many types of journaling, and now I want to share the most helpful journaling ideas for self improvement and give you some tips.
1. Morning pages journaling for self improvement
The Morning pages technique was introduced by Julia Cameron in her book “The Artist’s way”. She recommended journaling for self improvement first thing in the morning and writing three pages. There are no rules about what exactly you should write. The main idea is to get out all your thoughts and feelings. You can write anything that comes to your mind. For example: what do you want, how do you feel, what are you thinking about, what are you planning to do, what bothers you?
It could be really anything, but you should be honest with yourself. This method will help you clear your mind, understand yourself better, get some new ideas, and focus on things that are really important to you.
Sometimes, I start writing morning pages when I feel stuck or don’t know what to do, or if I feel too stressed for some time. I’ve noticed that it helps me almost every time.

2. Gratitude journal for self improvement
A gratitude journal is the best way to increase feelings of joy and happiness. Every morning or evening you can write down from five to ten things that you feel grateful for.
Even when you have problems or feel upset for some reason, you can still find something to be grateful for. It could be your friends or family, country or house, where you live, your job or opportunities that you have, your body, or your health.
It could even be just the good weather, a nice cup of coffee in the morning, an interesting book or movie, chatting with your friend, or a warm shower or bath. It could be anything. Just look around, think a bit, and you will find what to write down in your journal.
It’s a very simple technique, but it works. The more you focus on the good things, the more you start seeing them in your life. You are becoming more positive and more optimistic.
Writing a gratitude journal helped me a lot in quite difficult periods in my life, and I can’t recommend it enough.
I have a whole other post and video about gratitude. You can check it here: How to practice gratitude to become happier and change your life?
3. Success journal for self improvement
A success journal is a good way to improve your confidence or self-esteem. Maybe you’ve noticed how sometimes you can be focused more on what you haven’t done yet. You can have a lot on your to-do list, all your plans and goals, and maybe your everyday routine. Your brain continues to focus on all these things, and sometimes it is just deleting the other important part. This part is your successes, achievements, and small victories.
To feel more confident and more motivated, you need to remember what you have already done. Success journal is one of the best ways to do this. Every day, better if in the evening, you can write down everything you’ve done, even just small and maybe not very important things. After a few weeks, you should start feeling the difference.
